After sitting in Coop a couple of times, I tried to think of ways I could experience the place in a new way. Luckily, the space allows for students to sit above Coop. An opening in the floor permits one to peer into the space below while allowing noise and smells to drift upward.
This new perspective changed the way I viewed the space. Instead of focusing on what I could see, I paid more attention to other senses. I could hear the ice machine but could not see someone filling up their cup. I could smell the hash browns but could not see the person eating them.
Yet, the opening in the floor allowed a quick peek if I chose.

I absolutely love this. I frequent coop, but I have never even thought to walk upstairs and sit above it. I cannot imagine the difference in sound from moving from upstairs to downstairs. You have inspired me to go and see the difference in the two settings!
ReplyDeleteEllen, I know we're only in the observation phase of this project (and we're not yet technically creating artworks) but the composition of this photo is beautiful. This photo really shows how those above co-op sometimes look downward, but those in co-op are typically oblivious to onlookers. It would be cool if you recreated this photo during a late night snack rush for color and contrast.
